First of all you need to know what a meme is. A quick search for a definition will give you something like this: “An element of a culture or behavior that may be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, esp. imitation.“ But what does that actually mean? It means that every time you share a quote or saying, you are passing it along as truth. Scary isn’t it?
You ever find that children will imitate almost any word or short saying? The only difference between kids and adults is that we as adults already know how to speak so we don’t voice those little tidbits we hear or read. But they stick in our head just as much. If you have ever gotten a commercial or piece of a song stuck in your head, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those are memes.
Memes are culture, values, and beliefs all rolled up into one. They are the tidbits we pass on to our children. All those “inspirational” quotes you can remember at a moment’s notice. Thinking about them now aren’t you? Good. You should be thinking about them. What have YOU learned at the hands of some loose-lipped quotemonger?
There are a lot of memes out there that are dangerous and need to stop replicating. The ones that kill thought and creativity. The ones that convince you to hate and fear. They went viral a long time ago and now the disease is eating at our core. Don’t just see them and let them pass, recognize them and stop them.
Pass along quotes, stories, jokes and pictures that represent the world you WANT, not the one you live in. If you hate something why are you teaching your hate to others? What has the hate ever done FOR you?
Be the virus
