Have you ever seen the advertisements for “Catch It Keep It”? It’s a television show that appears to challenge people to design devices to save things, such as plasma TVs, from being destroyed. While I enjoy the idea of the creative aspect, and building things that protect stuff, I’m disturbed by the fact that perfectly good items are being destroyed. There’s also another show that’s all about creative ways to blow things up. It saddens me that people find this entertaining.
What’s even more saddening and disgusting to me is “art” made of food, such as the all-cheese house and murals made of toast. It’s sometimes hard to fathom the arrogance and decadence of a society that would waste so much in the name of entertainment.
Now, I have no problem with things like baking the world’s largest cookie and then feeding the cookie to the local townspeople and tourists. That’s fine, but food art that is left to rot or be consumed by animals is repulsive to me, when there are so many people in the world who are starving.
The destruction of perfectly good items is less horrible, but still unnecessary. Those things could be given to the needy, or simply not used at all.
I’m not sure if anything can be done about all the waste that occurs in the name of entertainment, but it can’t hurt to get people thinking about it. Maybe a lack of support for such shows and events would make them happen less. One can certainly hope.
As a whole, America is a very arrogant country. Not to say other countries are perfect, but I wonder if people really stop to consider that issues such as this one are part of why other countries hate us. Seriously, stop and think about how many people are starving and dying while we make houses out of cheese, sculptures from candy, chocolate wedding gowns and snow for the movies out of instant potatoes. If it doesn’t make you a little bit sick, you might want to think about it a little longer.
Food is something to be eaten, not wasted. If you’re going to make food art, at least let people eat it after you’ve displayed and photographed it.

Yeah, America’s wastefulness is quite revolting. It’s a trend that needs serious reversing. Some people are working hard to try and slow it down, but the wastefulness consumption machine keeps running, unfortunately…
