This has been boiling in my head for days, but I haven’t been able to find a way to express it. At this point it’s basically a rant, which is something I don’t really do anymore, but it’s got to come out before I scream.

I’ve seen it a million times in my life, but now that I’m trying to write more and have more success at it, it’s becoming this glaring, screaming thing that I can’t avoid. You can’t please everyone. More accurately, anything you say, no matter how polite or innocuous or or carefully worded it is, has the potential and even the likelihood of pissing someone off or offending them, or both.

Bubblews seems divided with people who want to write as they please, people who think they’ve nailed down the “right” way to write and therefore have the right to tell other people what to do, and people who are playing follow the leader or follow the loudest. I have seen a sickening number of posts by people telling others how to write, how not to write, enforcing their ideas of quality, and people asking others to tell them what to write and how to write. Posts abound from people feeling insecure about their writing because of other people’s opinions, particularly the opinions of those who act like some kind of experts. People are forcing themselves to change what they write and they’re miserable about it.

There are also people who are just facing the fact that no matter what you write about, someone’s going to get their a$$ in the air over it. Grammar, poetry, fluff, recipes, puppies, breakfast, gratitude, instruction… It doesn’t matter. Someone’s going to hate it and give you sh!t about it. Even if you write what some people say is the “right” stuff, there are going to be people that don’t like it or tell you you’re doing it wrong.

Add to that the fact that everyone has an opinion, lots of people think they’re right no matter what, and people have this really nasty habit of reading things into your words that were never there. I’m losing count of the number of times I’ve had to bite my tongue, not call someone a f*cking idiot, and explain myself over again, because they saw something in my words that wasn’t even remotely there. People seem to like looking for drama and bullsh!t that isn’t there.

So, it boils down to the fact that no matter what I (or anyone) write in a post, no matter what I say in a comment, someone’s going to get their knickers twisted over it. Now, many would say that it’s my job to fashion my words in such a way as to offend as few as possible. Be clearer, avoid any topic that raises the public’s ire. Really? Some of it is on me, but a lot of it is on the rest of the world. If they’d stop trying to turn their opinions into rules and stop looking for negativity and drama in every word posted on the internet, there’d be a lot less of an issue. I’m not going to spend my life trying to word things in such a way as to never offend the overly delicate senses of anyone out there. I’d go mad, because it’s not possible. “Hello” can p!ss some people off.

I just wish people would lay off. Stop being such a$$holes to other people. Your opinion is only that, an opinion. You way is one way, not the right way. Your thoughts are just thoughts, not rules. And quit reading negativity and attacks into everything online. And quit taking sh!t so personally. If your self-esteem and self-worth can be crushed or even seriously damaged by one opinion or sentence on the internet, you have bigger issues. Learn to ignore people and not take their words to heart. Or, try learning that it’s not always about you.

[Sighs] I could rant about this all day. I am a good person for the most part, and I really want to build a better world. But seriously, there are days when I want to b!tch slap every single person I come across because they’re acting so stupidly.
