Parents outraged at the idea of a smoking Toddler

Adults choosing to smoke is one thing, but what does it say when a parent allows a child to smoke? Two year old Ardi Rizal sparked controversy with his bad habit.

“At just 18-months-old, Ardi Rizal’s father gave him his first cigarette. Now two-year-old from Sumatra, Indonesia is smoking 40 cigarettes a day! Despite bribes from officials to give the family of the child a new car if he quits, it won’t be happening anytime soon.

His mother says, “He’s totally addicted. If he doesn’t get cigarettes, he gets angry and screams and batters his head against the wall. He tells me he feels dizzy and sick.””  – Liz Gellar –Gather News

The video of this child puffing away at his cigarette has gone viral in a very short time. Some people somehow find it amusing, while others are outraged by the behavior of little Ardi’s parents, who allow him to engage in this dangerous habit. If this were happening with an American child, you can bet there would have been a slew of calls to the local DFCS agency, and the parents would be in jail for child abuse.

Many people in our health-conscious times are against the idea of anyone smoking. I believe it is up to the individual. As adults, we can choose to risk our health or not, and we can make an educated decision. A child has no such ability. I’m sure this is not the only child in the world to be exposed to smoking at a young age, and I find it appalling that a parent would endanger the health of their child this way.

It’s sad to think that there are parents in the world who lack the education to know that smoking, drinking and other habits are not safe for children. No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to smoke, much less be given cigarettes by their parents. Once they reach the legal age of consent, then it becomes their choice, but while under the care of a parent, children should be protected from these dangers.

In a similar story of poor child care a man in Kentucky got his stepdaughter so drunk it could have killed her. Legal action is being taken against this man. One has to wonder why nothing is being done to Ardi Rizal’s parents. Like smoking, drinking is an adult decision, not something that should be allowed or encouraged in children.

Perhaps such stories spreading through the news and across the internet will be a wake-up call to the sad state of the world. Children should be cared for and protected, not exposed to horrid behaviors and endangered with such total disregard. With any luck, the public awareness of Ardi’s story will cause someone to help this child so he doesn’t die of smoking-related issues before he’s even old enough to go to school.

Update: Now 6, Ardi has tried to quit smoking and developed an addiction to junk food as a result. His parents are struggling to deal with his tantrums as he constantly demands food and toys. He now weighs well over double the healthy weight for a child his age.
