This post is for all those people out there who know the value of a good question. It’s also aimed like a peanut butter catapult at anyone who has ever uttered the phrase “You can’t do that”.
I’ve heard it dozens of times, in multiple different ways. Chances are good that you have heard it or read it today. Somebody out there says that someone else shouldn’t do something because of “X”(X being the coefficient of stupid involved in their slow as molasses brain). It gets thrown about a lot in regards to fashion, marketing, blogging, poetry, and a zillion and one other things (basically everything creative).
Have you been told that you are wearing something you shouldn’t? Has someone told you that there are certain rules for blogging that everyone knows? How about telling you that there are rules for poetry? There seem to be a lot of rules that people expect you to follow. Rules they heard from some outdated book, rules from some “insider” in an industry, rules that seemed to crop up all on their own with no attributable source.
My question is this: Who made THAT rule? Who made these so-called rules? Chances are really good that the answer will be something to the effect of “everybody knows that”. Oh Reeaally?
No thank you. You can keep your arbitrary rules and made up laws to yourself. I actually like wearing purple surgical scrubs, and no “rules” spouting idiot will stop me. I’m breaking every “rule” I can think of with my blog, and you can’t stop me (well I suppose you could if you were a truly dedicated dick). I’ll keep writing weird poetry and ignoring the elitists. I will continue to write the way I want and just enjoy the fact that my fans dig it ( you do don’t you?). Try putting me on one of those fashion shows where they “update” someone’s wardrobe and they will regret it. Don’t even think about my hair or beard either. Oddly enough, beards are back (go figure, ME trendy).
You can do it too, be a human being that is. Next time someone says you can’t or shouldn’t do something, ask them “Says who?”. Ignore the naysayers and you might just figure out a way to launch a marshmallow to Saturn with rubber bands and masking tape. Stop obeying the “rules” and embrace YOU.
I only know a few rules that everyone has to follow. Things like gravity and the need to breathe. I’m also pretty sure that everyone really does know that murder is wrong. If you aren’t aware of these things, then maybe you need more help than I can offer.
PS – I chose the picture I did because there is NO rule that says a picture must be relevant. I just happen to LIKE kittens (who doesn’t?) :)~
