Candle magic is one of my favorite kinds of magic. I love the simplicity and versatility of it, and candles are probably one of the easiest ritual materials to get hold of. Does the kind of candle you use make a difference though? Let’s talk about it.
Personally, I have never been one to be too terribly particular about my candles. I don’t subscribe to the idea that you have to have certain candles from a certain source in order for your spellwork or rituals to be successful. I know that some do believe this, but I think it’s just a limiting belief.
For me, I find that basic 4″ chime candles are great for almost all of my magical work. I usually buy the boxes of assorted colors, but you can also buy single colors if you think you’re going to use a lot of the same color. If I’m doing something big that requires a long burning time, I’ll buy a pillar candle in the color I need. If I’m doing something really special, I might buy a metallic or scroll candle. The chime candles are my favorite though. They’re inexpensive and completely effective, and sometimes you can even get them at a local store. (Check during post-Christmas sales!)
I know that some people wonder about using things like birthday candles for spells. I’d say, if it feels right, go for it. If the appearance and color work for you, that matters far more than what anyone else thinks. Magic is all about energy, and if you get good energy from something, then it’s going to work well for you.
Now, for me, I’m not into buying candles that are already anointed or carved. If I’m going to do that, I like to do it myself. I feel that my energy should be the only thing on my ritual elements, so I steer clear of anything that’s already been set with intention by someone else, unless I really trust them. If you really like the look or feel of a pre-set candle though, feel free to use them. Just don’t feel like you have to or that a spell that calls for one can’t work just as well with another, simpler candle.
When it comes to dripless or regular, I think that’s a matter of preference. I like dripless candles, but if you want to drip the wax or use the melted wax as part of the ritual, then you need to take that into account. If you are using traditional candles, make sure that you have a holder or plate that can keep the mess from going everywhere.
As far as color goes, there are loads of correspondence tables that you can look at to get an idea of the color that will work best for your intention. However, you should never be afraid to go with your gut. Just because green is usually used for wealth doesn’t mean that you can’t use it for love. If you get a feeling from a candle, listen to it. Remember, energy means a lot more than tradition or what other people do.
In closing, I’d say that you should use whatever candles you want to use, and not worry about what anyone else is doing. I do recommend that you cleanse your candles before using them though. You don’t want anyone else’s energy messing with your spellwork! I usually cleanse and charge my candles using a selenite spiral and/or my homemade cleansing tincture.
