How to find your personal creative inspiration
Sometimes, finding inspiration for what to create can be the hardest part of the artistic process. Luckily, there are many ways you can tap into your muse, and spark your creativity.
Ideally, we all want to be full of ideas for what to create in our chosen medium. We want inspiration to flow like a river, and never stop supplying us with new things to make. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work like that, so you have to find ways to spark your mind into new ideas.
For some people, meditation is a great way to find inspiration. You might do a full-out meditation session to tap into your creative center, or you might just sit in a quiet room with some nice music and free your mind of the distractions that keep you from creating. Either way, clearing out the clutter in your brain and becoming calm may be just what you need.
Looking over work you have already created is another good way to spark your creativity. Look at your past work and think about what was good, what was bad, where you could improve and what you haven’t done yet. All of these thoughts can get your mind on track for a new creation.
Looking at other people’s work can also be a wonderful way to get new ideas. In my jewelry making, I often look at commercial jewelry pieces and try to figure out how to make them by hand. I also look at the work of other jewelry crafters to see what materials they use, what colors they choose, and what techniques they employ.
Learning new techniques is also a way to spark creativity. If you expand your knowledge and ability in your artistic field, you open yourself up to a new world of crafting options. You may want to learn about new materials, new techniques or new trends. You might even want to learn a completely different type of crafting. Often you can bring various art forms together. For instance, I used my skills in painting, working with clay and beading all together in a single project. I crafted a pendant out of clay, hand-painted the design, then added it to a hand-beaded necklace.
Sometimes, it can also be helpful to talk with other crafters to get ideas. Join a local crafting group, or join one online. Talk about techniques, styles, materials, and how they find their inspiration. Interacting with other people who art artistic can be a wonderful thing to keep you motivated and inspired.
However you decide to connect with your muse, don’t ever worry that it’s gone forever. Sometimes it just needs a little nudge!
