I just watched a video on KarmaTube about “suspended coffee” and I think it’s a really wonderful idea.
Basically, when someone comes in to buy a cup of coffee, they have the option of also paying for a second cup. They don’t get that cup, but instead the shop keeps a tally of how many cups have been paid for, and local people can come in and get a free cup of coffee. It’s intended as a way to help the community by allowing the homeless or those with little cash get a cup of coffee if they want one.
I think this is a really wonderful idea. There isn’t much of it going on in the US, but I hope it catches on here. It actually got me to thinking: coffee is nice, but what else could be suspended? What if when you went to get a burger or bagel you could pay for an extra so that a homeless or needy person could have some food? Imagine being able to do this at cafes, diners or even service stations that sell food and drinks.
I don’t eat out often, but I’d gladly suspend a meal now and then to help someone less fortunate. I’ve been poor enough to have to ask other people for food, so I understand to some extent how hard it can be. For the homeless, having a way to get food or beverages outside the limited hours and supply of soup kitchens could be a blessing.
