Part one of this series discussed some general tips for survival. This time I’ll be focusing on tips related to food.
Remember that canned and dried food lasts a long long time. Twinkies actually do have a shelf life, no matter how many preservatives they have in them.
Salt and vinegar are your friends, they are natural preservatives.
Honey is a natural anti-bacterial and can be added to many foods to extend their life. This is the same reason that honey is dangerous for infants and small children.
Many vegetables will grow roots if you suspend them partially in a container of water. Four toothpicks stuck into a potato to hold it partly in a glass for example. Once a plant has grown roots, it’s ready to be planted. One potato can become a dozen potatoes, good news indeed.
Alcoholic beverages do indeed lower your body temperature and a host of other bad things, but if used properly, they can extend life. Beer for instance is high in calories and has many complex sugars that your body needs to survive. Monks during medieval times would drink beer during Lent, keeping them going while fasting.
Remember that salt is a rock. Rocks do NOT spoil. Why do they put expiration dates on salt anyway?
Many dried foods will not spoil for many years if kept dry. Jerky is your friend.
It may make you uncomfortable but the family pet is an animal. Animals are walking sources of protein.
Refrigeration might be difficult after an apocalypse but not impossible. You can keep food underground in a cellar or dig a deep hole and keep it covered. Streams and rivers can keep food cold as well, just remember to seal your food containers tightly no matter what you do.
Sealable plastic containers are your friend. They will keep water, bugs and air out of your food.
Get a book on edible plants for your area to make foraging easier and less dangerous. If you don’t know what something is, don’t eat it.
