I know it’s a small thing in the grand scheme of world issues, but cheating is a sign of a larger problem in the world, so it’s something that I think about. I have a problem with people who cheat at games to take the top slot in high-score tables.
Quite often it’s easy to spot people who cheat. Their score is so far above all the other score that you know the chances of them getting it by just being awesome is pretty slim. Often they dominate numerous high score lists, and you know they can’t be that good at every game they play.
So why do they do it? My guess is they want attention. They want to feel superior to others and make other people feel less able. It’s bragging rights. But what do you really gain when you didn’t put any skill or effort into getting that score? Wow! you’re so awesome! You cheated your way to the top! It must feel so great to be you! Probably not. Winning that wasn’t earned tends to be hollow and not keep you feeling good for very long.
Cheating at games to get high scores and have your name seen is just a small example of the world’s mentality of doing anything to get to the top. Cheat, lie, step on people, cut corners, whatever it takes, all that matters is being top of the heap. It’s sad. What do you really get in the long run if you didn’t earn it? Does it really make you happy? Are you so broken that making other people feel less talented or less capable makes you feel better about yourself?
I don’t believe that people should cheat or cut corners. If you want to be a winner at anything in life, be willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to get there. If you scheme your way to the top, it’s not going to last and it’s not going to improve your life. Get what you want honestly, and if you can’t, then maybe you should be doing something else.
