- Mesquite: healing, love, dreams, and purification
There’s an interesting little story behind how these (and the other mesquite products) ended up in the shop. I was walking home from the local convenience store one day and felt something odd in my shoe. When I got home, I took a look and saw what appeared to be a small piece of branch sticking out of the sole. That seemed strange, and I tried to remove it. Well, it was really in there and took some effort to get out. What finally emerged was a bit scary. It was a big, hard thorn!
I didn’t think that there was anything around my neighborhood that had huge thorns, so I went online to look it up. It turns out that a lot of the trees in my area are Mesquite, and they have some pretty serious thorns. Now, most people wouldn’t have cared much, but my mind immediately popped into creativity mode. “People use thorns in spells, don’t they?” I wondered. After a few more minutes of searching, I found that thorns are often used in spells for protection, revenge and warding.
Now, Hawthorn and Blackthorn thorns are what are most often sold, but I saw no reason not to go collect and list some Mesquite thorns. I’m partial to the idea that there’s magic in everything, and just because a thing isn’t widely used, doesn’t mean it isn’t good or powerful. So, off I went to grab some branches that had fallen from the local trees so I could collect thorns. As luck would have it, we’d had some bad storms and there were plenty of dry branches to choose from, so no trees were harmed in my gathering process.
These thorns are a bit scary and dangerous, but beautiful in their own way. I hope that they bring potency to whatever spell (or craft) someone chooses to use them in.
