For many years I have been trying to have a better life and be a better person. Eventually I wondered what it means to be a better person. That’s the real question, the one that is incredibly hard to answer. Just when you think you have the answer, the question changes. You start to wonder why you think what you do. You start to wonder who you are, and why you believe the things you do. Do you actually believe the things that you think you do, or are you just parroting what you have been taught?
Ask yourself what you want out of life. I don’t mean material things, but what you REALLY want. It is one thing to want an Xbox, and entirely another to realize that you want an Xbox because you are lonely, or because you have serious rage to work on.
Listen to people. I mean really listen to them. Hear their insecurities and their fears. Don’t just wait for your turn to talk. I fail at this sometimes, I’m not perfect either.
Realize that perfection does NOT exist. Not really.
Realize that after all these years neither science nor religion have all the answers. All you get from either of them is educated guesses, half-facts, and theories. I know that a lot of the world is mysterious and poorly understood, I don’t need someone with a degree to tell me that.
Make someone smile and your day seems easier. If you are having a rough day, make someone smile or laugh. Your day (and theirs) will seem much more bearable.
Understand that people can and will change over the course of a lifetime. You may grow apart from friends you used to have, but you can always make more. Don’t be afraid of change, expect it and embrace it.
No one else can be you. Don’t expect other people to be able to be you, and don’t let others tell you how to be you. Do they have to live with your mind when they go to bed at night? Conversely, never attempt to make people be something you want them to be. Encourage them to be true to themselves and watch the fun ensue.
I believe that people are people are people. No one is better or worse than anyone else. We are all residents on this ball of dirt we call Earth. There is not one single reason for all the malevolent things we have done to others. You can make all the excuses you want but it doesn’t change the facts.
Today you can choose. You can be part of the solution, or a continuance of the problem. Whatever you choose, remember that a decision of inaction is STILL a choice. Actions are choices, and choices are actions.
