You’ve probably noticed that I’ve become a No Kid Hungry Blogger, and since I’ve been talking a lot about food today, it was a natural shift to come to this topic. It makes me incredibly sad that there even has to be something like the No Kid Hungry program, and I believe that as a society we need to work to make programs like this a thing of the past.

That may sound odd, as if I’m saying that we shouldn’t have programs to help people in need, but that’s not what I mean at all. What I mean is that we should do whatever is necessary to make it so that we don’t need special programs to help people. We should take steps to create a society where there are no people suffering from hunger or poverty like there are now. We created the society that we live in today, and we have the power to create a better one as well.

It saddens me to think that there are children who don’t have enough food to eat before they go to school. I can remember a time when I was on of those kids. I actually understand what it is to be poor. No one should have to live like that. It’s important for all people to have proper nutrition, but it’s especially important for kids, so that they have the energy they need to fuel their learning and their growing minds and bodies.

It is totally within our power to make this situation go away. We could bring jobs back to America, pay fair wages and provide better food and budgeting education so that parents can not only afford to buy enough nutritious food, but know how to portion and prepare it so that their entire family can be healthy and well fed. All we have to do is make it a priority.

As family and neighbors we can also share information about healthy food choices, budgeting, buying good food and the like. We can take steps to make sure that kids get the nutrition they need. We can stand up and speak out and make a change. If you can go to sleep at night knowing that there are hungry children and not be pained by it, you might want to reevaluate your status as a human being. This is an issue that should be at the forefront of people’s minds and each of us should be doing everything that we can to put an end to hunger in this country for all people.
