I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been slowly transitioning from commercial health and beauty products to natural ones. I’ve already switched from processed foods to natural ones and home-cooking, so continuing the switch in the rest of my life just made sense. I’m not one of those extremist anti-everything people, but I realized that I’ve been falling for the hype and putting all kinds of crap into and onto my body for way too long. My body is my temple and I should be taking much better care of it. So, I started switching from the chemical-laden crap that we’re told we need to buy over to handcrafted or homemade natural products.
It’s kind of horrific when you think about all the chemicals and crap that are in the products you use. And of course, the companies and beauty magazines make you feel like you’re abnormal and disgusting if you’re not using what they’re selling you, which is bullshit. Sorry, it just is. People got along just fine before they started using all this junk. In fact, in many ways they were better off than we are. Whether people believe it or not, a lot of the products that we use actually perpetuate our need for those and other products. The human body is pretty amazing and doesn’t really need a lot of crap to stay healthy and beautiful. We can cut out a lot of things and be just as clean, healthy and attractive, if not more so, than using all the stuff we’re told we have to have in our bathrooms.
I started on this path when Arm & Hammer Sensitive Toothpaste stopped working for me. I couldn’t afford a dentist and my teeth hurt and my gums bled. After years of faithful use, I was sick of it and decided to look into natural toothpaste. I bought some from Dirty Stash (Now Georgia’s Apothecary) and I’ve never looked back. That started me on a track of switching out products. One by one I’ve been turning away from the commercial products and finding or making natural ones instead.
I’m going to do a short series to talk about each of the switches I’ve made, and the ones that I’m planning to make int he future. I’ll tell you what I was using and what I’m using now. Oh, and just so you know, I’ll be linking to all the products I’m buying. I figure you’ll want to know some good products in case you want to try switching too. This means that I’m going to be plugging Georgia’s Apothecary like crazy. I don’t get anything at all for linking to her. Etsy doesn’t have a referral program, I just happen to love 99% of the products I’ve gotten from her. She deserves the free advertising as far as I’m concerned. Of course, I make some of my own products too. I love Georgia and her natural goodies, but I don’t buy things from her that I can make at home.
As far as the picture up there goes, that’s pretty much the extent of my health and beauty products. Yup, that little grouping is all I use. Well, I didn’t put my mineral makeup up there, but that’s the only thing missing I think. The photo shows (left to right, back to front): Natural bristle body brush, teaberry cold press soap, vitamin E oil, natural lotion, natural deodorant (the tin in front and the recycled dispenser behind) – boar bristle hair brush, natural remineralizing clove toothpaste, natural lip balm, sugar scrub. Oh! I’m switching to baking soda and vinegar for my hair this weekend, so that’s not in the photo yet. But yeah, a small selection is all I use now. I look and feel better than I have in years because of this switching. I’m really happy with it and figured it was about time to really share. Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the posts!
