I’ve re-watched the first three movies in the Good Witch series, and I don’t think I’ve seen Cassie admit to being a witch yet. She smiles and evades, but she never says she is one. Whether she ever would or not is up for debate, but it got me to thinking. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Cassie’s mindset is much like mine. Witch is just a word, and we really don’t need labels.

Even though some people claimed the word fit, I always refused to be labeled as a witch, even when I was practicing ritual magic. Probably because society, for many ages now, has associated the word witch with something very negative. Witches have long been considered evil. Now, that is only because of people’s ignorance and refusal to accept anything for what it is. Witches are not inherently evil, nor good. Any use of magic is all about intention. Any person can be good or evil, witches included.

Even if you try to imagine a “good” witch, it still conjures up certain images and ideas that may or may not be applicable. Every individual is different. Every person’s gifts are unique. Not every witch can heal, and they’re certainly not all out skylarking in fields under the full moon.

In the end, witch is just a word, a label. What it means to someone saying it, someone hearing it or someone applying it to themselves could all mean different things. a person is a person, they don’t really need a label. Some have gifts, some don’t. (yet) some have skills that others don’t. When all is said and done, we’re all just people.
