One of the long-running themes in the Good Witch movies is to not assume that someone or something different is bad. Being a spiritual person and a “witch” Cassie Nightingale faces a lot of judgement when she moves into Middleton, which is a small, traditional town. They’ve never seen a metaphysical shop or the kind of homemade health products and spiritual products sold at the Bell, Book and Candle. Swayed by the mayor’s influence, much of the town gives Cassie and her shop the cold shoulder.

It’s far too common for people to pass judgment, usually negative, on things and people they don’t understand. Just because someone or something is outside your normal scope of understanding, doesn’t mean it’s bad. Even if you’ve been taught that something or someone is bad, that doesn’t mean they are. We should all take it upon ourselves to go into everything with an open mind and make our own decisions.

Over the course of the movies more and more people in Middleton have experiences with Cassandra which show them that she and her wares have been judged unfairly. It’s a shame that people don’t open their hearts and minds to new things and people so that they can have good experiences right from the start. Even if the thing or person does turn out to be bad, it’s better to learn for yourself than take someone else’s word for it.

We should all take the time, when a new thing or person presents itself in our lives, to learn and make our own decisions. No matter what others say or what you’ve been taught, make your own determinations based on your own experience. In my own life I’ve loved products and companies others disliked, befriended people that everyone else hated, and been entranced when learning about things that others thought were negative or wrong. Conversely, I’ve disliked people that everyone loves, hated products and companies others raved about, and been repulsed by ideas and information others thought was right or good.

What’s most important is to always gain your own knowledge and make your own decisions. Choose for yourself and don’t let what other people say or think be the determining factor in how you react to something or treat someone.
