The absolute bombing of Kirk Cameron’s film “Saving Christmas” is such big news that even I heard about it. I went and watched the trailer for it. Actually, I couldn’t even watch the whole thing. It was pretty apparent why this movie was such a failure. After seeing the trailer, it got me to thinking about the Christian-led insensitivity that has been happening around the holidays.

I’ve talked about the Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays thing before. Unfortunately, the issue keeps coming up year after year, and this year there was even a movie about it, which is ridiculous. Now, before I go any further, let me say that I don’t dislike all Christians by any means. I just dislike the crazy, zealot ones. But I don’t like crazy zealots of any flavor. So with that said…

What pisses me off is the fact that Christians are claiming that everyone else is killing Christmas and ruining “their” holiday and being insensitive. However, they’re being insanely hypocritical, and to them, that’s just fine. What the hell people? This whole thing is just ridiculous.

Let’s break it down quickly: Christmas, as a holiday event name, was created by the Christians (after they actually started celebrating it), but most of the traditions were “adapted” from Pagans (I read a fascinating Christian/Hebrew essay on the specifics of this recently). Jesus wasn’t born on December 25th (There was just a huge conversation on FaceBook with hundreds of participants on this subject). A person can celebrate any way they want in their own home or religious establishments. Most people who are supposedly “killing” Christmas are simply seeking respect of their beliefs when in public areas, by disallowing religious-specific elements, including those of their own faith. Christians seem to be the only ones trying to push their ways in the face of everyone else, insisting that everyone must be like them.

Ugh, I know this could sound like Christian bashing, I promise it’s not. It’s just crazy people causing shit. I think that the holidays time, since there are so many holidays of so many faiths in the late November through Early January period, should be all or nothing. Either every faith should be able to freely display and enact elements of their faith or no one should. Either everybody gets a cut of the holiday spirit, or no one does. I’m all for non-religious decorations that are pleasing to the majority. I’m all for generic greetings of love and goodwill that don’t specify a faith orientation. I think people need to untwist their knickers and try to be more sensitive and less hypocritical.

Christians do not own the holiday season. They do not have the one “right” way. They do not deserve to be treated in a more favorable way than any other faith. No other faith can make those claims either. For all the love and faith that some people claim during the holidays, they’re sure pretty damn hateful to anyone who’s not like them. This has to stop. Hate and domination and selfishness are not what the holidays are supposed to be about. Respect your fellow person and stop trying to shove your ways down their throats and in their faces every day. If you don’t want them doing it to you, don’t do it to them. It’s that damn simple. Stop being hypocrites.

And really, it’s gotten so bad that some people are calling decorated trees offensive, and calling it offensive to refer to them as “holiday trees”. Really? Trees, decorated or not, have been an element of many faiths long before Christianity was a glint in anyone’s eye. Get over it. Unless they’re adorned with nothing but specifically one-religion elements, stuff your butt-hurt and enjoy this thing of beauty with your fellow man.

What it really boils down to is that the people really killing the holidays are the ones who insist on starting shit about them rather than just celebrating in their own way, in their own space, and keeping their traditions alive without shoving them in anyone else’s face.
