Man, I miss Maine. That’s the first thing I think of when I look at these crab shells. I don’t particularly like cold weather or winter, but I loved Maine. I was dirt poor for most of the time that I was living there, but I still have some really great memories.
I will never forget the day that I collected these shells. It was in ’98 I think, in early summer. The reason it sticks out so much is because we never intended to end up at the beach. My first husband and I were out on a leisurely bike ride when we decided “Hey! Let’s go to the beach!” That wouldn’t be so memorable, if it weren’t for the fact that I was in shorts and ended up with the worst sun/wind burn I’ve ever had in my life. Luckily, I didn’t notice it until after I got home.
I had never been to Old Orchard Beach before. Actually, I’d never been to any beach before. It was a pretty big thing for me. I was in awe of the ocean and the sand and all the wildlife. I got scared half to death when a pelican swooped in and landed on a light pole near me. It was bigger than I’d imagined! I saw quite a lot of cool things that day.
Of course, being who I am, I had to collect a bunch of “craft supplies” from the area. I grabbed sand, a big bagful of snail shells and a whole slew of crab shells in all different sizes. I was amazed at how clean most of them were. The birds and the sun did a good job. I was also tripped out by the fact that a lot of the crabs still had the eyes intact. That was freaky.
I used a lot of what I brought home. We lived in an area that had good tourist activity, even though our town was barely a blip on the map. I made wind chimes out of most of the snail shells, and some jewelry too. Most of the crabs got nature scenes painted on their backs. A few of the small ones that had all of their limbs got clear-coated and I sold them as novelties. I made some good money that summer!
As with anything though, not all of my haul got used up, and some of it went into storage. What really amazes me is that after nearly 20 years and many moves, these ones are still intact. It’s a testament to my packing ability, that’s for sure! I actually forgot that I even had them until late last year. I took them out and tried to think of what to paint on them, but I haven’t done that in so long I was just stumped. I decided that they’d be better off getting a new home as either a craft or ritual supply. I really hope that someone will be enjoying them soon.
