Power outages can be a very boring time. Here are some ideas you can use to amuse children and adults alike when the lights go out.

1. Tell stories. Power outages are an especially good time for horror or mystery stories. No need for books, just make them up as you go along, if you don’t know any from memory.
2. Play “What is it”. This is an easy game where you give clues about an item or animal. For example, for skunk, you would give clues like “it’s black”, “It has fur”, and “It smells bad.”
3. Play word association. One person says a word, and the next person says the first word that comes to their mind based on the previous word. It’s easy, and can be really funny.
4. Play “One word story”. This is where you try to get everyone in the room to tell a story, but each person is only allowed to say one word at a time.
5. Sing. Hey, if the power’s out, you don’t have to worry about looking silly!
6. Role-playing. Since you only need to talk, free-form role playing can be an enjoyable thing to do in the dark.
7. Tell riddles. If you’re in an area that’s prone to power loss, it might be a good idea to memorize some over time so you can remember them later.
8. Play “Murder Mystery”.  This is for grown-ups. You can find lots of them online. Basically you describe the deceased person, and each person gets to ask yes or no questions to try to figure out how the person died.
