I’ve been eating a lot healthier lately, and that means a lot of vegetables. I’ve felt kind of bad about throwing the scraps out and wanted to do something with them. Then I had a great thought: bird food! Why shouldn’t my little feathered buddy eat better too?

I already feed Stoli an organic pellet, but he needs more than that. The thing is, he hates wet, fresh vegetables. Making a dried veggie food for him is the perfect answer. It’s also super easy to do.

Whenever we have vegetables there tend to be scraps. Broccoli stems, bits that we cut off the asparagus and brussel sprouts and so on. There’s also the fact that sometimes the veggies get a little stale and aren’t so tasty anymore. By making vegetable bird food, that waste becomes something healthy and awesome for my pet.

All you have to do is take the scraps or small bits of vegetable, cut them up small, put them on a piece of foil and let them sit until they’re dry, then store them in an airtight container. It’s that simple!

Now, you do need to know what is safe for your bird to eat. There are plenty of bird-safe food lists online that you can look at. My veggie mix changes based on what we’re eating, but contains things like broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, spinach, peppers, carrot, corn, green bean, peas and lettuce. I’ve also added plain rice cereal, sunflower seeds, dry crushed pasta, sesame seeds and dried egg shell. it’s super healthy, and he loves it.

If you have a bird, or know someone who does, try this out. It’s a great way to give them loads of healthy goodness and do something useful with those leftover bits of vegetables.
