There’s been a lot of religion talk going on lately, and it got me to thinking about how incredibly ignorant and brainwashed a lot of those “true believer” sheep are.
I used to be married to a Christian. He was very devoted, and not really thrilled when he found out I was Wiccan. (Which I’m not anymore, by the way.) Anyway, he got me to read the whole bible, and of course after slogging through it I had loads of questions. There was one point that I remember really well, even after all these many years. Fossils were created by Satan.
I’m paraphrasing here, but this is the gist of the conversation:
Me: That Leviathan thing, that could have been a dinosaur, right?
J: No. Dinosaurs never existed.
Me: What? We have fossils and all sorts of proof that they did. Of course there were dinosaurs.
J: People dug up bones, that doesn’t mean there were dinosaurs.
Me: Carbon dating and other scientific methods prove their age, and there’s a whole lot on the topic. Dinosaurs are real.
J: Carbon dating is an evil trick of the Devil. It’s not real.
Me. Seriously? So you’re saying the whole thing is a sham?
J: “Fossils” were put on Earth by Satan to lead people away from God.
Me: Wait… What? I thought you believed that God created everything that ever was, so God would have created dinosaurs.
J: No. There are no dinosaurs, no dragons or unicorns, and we did not come from monkeys. It’s all lies by Satan to get people to not believe in God. Science is the Devil’s work.
It went on, but you get the idea. His church taught him that science, fossils, all of that was created by Satan to lead people away from God. Basically, they taught him and all the others in that church that science was all lies. The Book was the only truth. Oh, and that book was written by the hand of God and was therefore beyond questioning. Yeah, okay. But really, he and the others truly believed that dren.
That’s one of my issues with organized religion. Actually, that’s the root of all my issues with organized religion. They teach people to be mindless drones who never question anything. The book is the end all and be all of everything. Scientific facts are the work of the Devil. Seriously? How can people be so weak-minded that they fall for that BS? Of course, that leads me to the question of, if God gave people free will, why does the church want so badly to take it away and make everyone think and act exactly the same. But I’ll leave that for another post.
