Our society has many flaws. One of which is the fact that people feel helpless and believe that there’s nothing they can do to make a positive change in the world. What they don’t realize is that they actually can make a difference, they just have to want to and be willing to do what needs to be done.
Sometimes I think to myself “If I don’t do something, who will?”. I think that’s a question worth asking oneself. Most people go through life either feeling helpless, or just waiting for someone else to do something for them. Unfortunately, as more people adopt the “What can I do and why should I bother?” attitude, there are fewer and fewer people actually doing anything.
I believe that people need to take it upon themselves to do whatever they can to make the world a better place. No matter how insignificant you may think your actions are, at least they’re adding to the good of the world. So what can you actually do? There’s more than you think, but here are a few basics.
Become the best person you can be. Look for the flaws within yourself, accept them, and work to repair them. As you become a better person you set an example for those around you. Also, as a more whole and healthy person you are better able to do good in the world.
Treat others as you wish to be treated. show kindness and respect to everyone you meet. Don’t look on people as unworthy or think you have to know someone well to be good to them. Every small act of kindness and compassion sends a positive ripple out into the world.
Think for yourself. There are so many people and entities trying to force their thoughts and ways into your head every day. You need to learn to think for yourself. Question things and be willing to learn and change. When you think for yourself you break society’s grip on you and you become better able to act in ways that are beneficial to yourself and others.
Speak out. Share yourself and your views with the world. Don’t push your beliefs, but do share. We have become a cold, digital society. By sharing your stories with the world you will help people to reconnect to their humanity and their compassion for one another.
Look for little things that you can do to brighten someone’s day. Help someone load groceries into their car, hold a door, rescue an animal. There are so many little things that we can do that will make a difference to at least one person, and that’s better than not making a difference at all.
What are you doing to make the world a better place?
