As I said, I think that I and people like me spend a lot of time thinking about the state of the world and trying to figure out what the source of it is. There are as many theories as there are kinds of people, and unfortunately not a damn one of us knows who’s right and who’s wrong. Neither faith nor science has been able to come up with the answer yet.

What’s happening to society is like a disease. More and more people are being infected, and new strains of the virus are showing up every day. In medicine, when you see someone who’s ill, you (if you’re a good doctor) try to find the source of the illness. When you can do that, you can find a treatment, cure or vaccine. Until then, you’re just chasing the symptoms.

That’s what we’re doing right now, chasing the symptoms. What else can we do? When you don’t know the actual source of the infection, there’s nothing you can do about it. All you can do is look at the symptoms and treat them as best you can. it’s frustrating and sometimes maddening, but it’s the best any of us can do right now.

The symptoms of the global disease are easy to see. Hate, war, starvation, sickness, abuse, control. The best any of us can do right now is to treat each of those to the best of our ability. The good thing is that every single person on the planet has the power to do something to make a positive change. Even the poorest, sickest person on the planet can make a positive change. Something as simple as a smile or thoughtful word can make a world of difference, even if it’s only to one other individual. Most of us can do more.

It should be our mission not to be angry and hateful and go to war against every damn thing, but to do what we can to be a cure for what ails us all. Be a beacon of love, compassion, right living and hope. Take every positive action that you can. Sign a petition, recycle, hold a door, be a friend, fix your personal flaws, lift others up, create an environment of freedom and hope.

Think of it as if the world is a sick patient. Can they get better if they’re dirty, hungry and stressed? Of course not. You’re no doctor, you can’t cure the disease, but you can make sure the patient is comfortable, fed and as happy as possible. You can make them smile, give them love, and give them a reason to heal. that’s what we have to do for the world. Until someone figures out the source so we can treat it directly, we have to treat the symptoms as best we can.
