Skull Head Eyes - Image: Public Domain, PixabayFor nearly as long as I can remember I have been a fan of monsters and horror movies. When I was a child I would check books out of the library that detailed how movie monsters were made. I would read anything I could about Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff or Jack Pierce.

I love the old Universal monsters. The Phantom of the Opera, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, Dracula and all the rest. I’ve seen the old black and white movies and I STILL like them. The original Mummy is creepy as hell, lemme tell you.

When I got a little older I would read Fangoria magazine and try anything I could figure out or learn from the RARE “behind the scenes” TV spots that came on. Back then, there was no such thing as DVD. VHS tapes rarely had any special features, so if you wanted to know anything you HAD to read about it. I learned how to make fake blood that would stand up to freezing temperatures when I was 13 years old. I’m actually proud of that. I also figured out how to achieve a zombie look with kitchen items. It was super gross and worked quite well. Messy as hell to clean up though.

I think I was the only boy who had his own jar of Pond’s cold cream for removing makeup. Halloween was a HUGE thing for me, I loved being able to become something else for a while. I loved the freaked out or admiring looks from people even more. I knew I had done a good job when strangers wanted to take my picture while I was out trick or treating.

To this day, I still love horror and FX makeup. I watch “Face Off” almost religiously, and I try to watch a horror movie at least twice a week. I’ve seen every type of horror movie that you can name and I love almost all of them.

I get very annoyed at some of the movies that get labeled as horror though. I understand WHY, I just disagree strongly. An example? Sure thing kemosabe. How about “Se7en“? I would consider it a crime drama, and yet it often (mistakenly) gets labeled as horror. I love the movie, don’t get me wrong. The effects are amazing! but horror it AIN’T.

I like horror-comedy, zombies, vampires, slashers, found footage, haunted houses, demon possessions, monsters, and even some psychological thrillers (even if they aren’t really horror to me). I’ve seen so many movies that it’s HARD to find new ones. I still manage to find a few gems, but hollywood keeps putting out high budget crap. I even watch cheesy low budget (B) movies on purpose. The things that some artists can accomplish on a shoestring budget are nothing short of miraculous.

Ok, so you got this far in this post and you know I love FX, makeup, and horror movies. So why tell you all this? Because I plan on doing more movie reviews, horror specifically, and I think of this as my sorta-resume. I’m a movie junkie, and horror is my favorite genre. I’m not some insider, just a HUGE fan. I won’t waste my time on a movie that can’t grab my attention in 30 minutes. If it’s boring after half an hour, I find something else to watch. I also don’t give a flying flip about WHO is in a movie, I care more about characters and storyline. The effects will wow me, but not convince me that a movie is good. “Prometheus” is a good example here. It had truly awesome effects, but it SUCKED.

So if I tell you that a horror movie is good, it IS. I’ll even tell you WHY. If I say that a movie was a bomb, I’ll tell you why about that too. I want to be entertained above all. That’s what movies are FOR. They should educate, enlighten, or entertain. If they can’t do one of the three Es then I don’t see a purpose for their existence. My two cents for what it’s worth.

Have fun ya’ll!
