potted-plant-pixaI learned a little lesson recently, and I’ve decided it’s worth sharing. I had this Pothos plant in nothing but water, and it was dying, so I wanted to put it into some soil. I didn’t want to spend the money to go buy potting soil, so I got some help to dig some good soil out of the yard. Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, it was and it wasn’t.

The soul was great and the plant sprang back to a vibrant green and started growing new leaves. My little plant was saved! Unfortunately, there was a downside. I was prepared for some weeds and grass to sprout up, which they did. I just plucked them out, no biggie. What I didn’t think about was the bugs.

I’d gone through the dirt when I was putting it in the pot and didn’t see anything out of place, so it didn’t occur to me that there might be creepy crawlies in there. I can only guess that either they were really well hidden, or there were insect eggs in the soil. I’ve found two tiny millipedes and what looked like a baby roach crawling in the pot. It was gross, and I had to kill them.

I don’t know if there’s any way to avoid bringing in bugs if I use outdoor soil again, but I sure will keep it in mind.
