Amigurumi Frog - Image: © Briana BlairI’ve been sitting here all day today (after a small breakdown over the lack of sales lately) trying to write up promotional posts about my books. I’m horrible at talking about my own stuff. I always have been. I can list off facts, but when it comes to making what I do sound great and really pitching it so that people want it, I’m kind of terrible.

I’ve gotten write-ups done for 6 of the books so far. Some of them are pretty good, some of them not so much. I’m just not one of those people who’s really good at talking about themselves and what they do. I’m trying though. One way or another, I need to find ways to get what I do out into the world more. Yes, I do want the profits, obviously, but what I want most is to just have my stuff out there in the world with people enjoying it. I wish I knew how to get better at talking about my work, but it’s just one of those things that I’ve never really gotten my head around.

Doing the books is one thing, they have words and content and I can kind of talk about that. I think I can do a halfway decent post for each of the books. When it comes to the jewelry and the Zazzle stuff though, I’m pretty much lost. I tried doing in-progress posts about my jewelry, but to be honest, that was a pain in the ass to stop all the time to take photos. There’s really no story behind most of my crafts either, I just make what seems fun and is cool at the moment. That makes it kind of hard to talk about on the blog.

The same is true of the art. More often than not, I’m just doing something to be doing it, because an idea hit me, but there’s no deep, interesting story behind it. I got a few posts done about some of my designs, then I just ran out of things to say. I wish that I could get someone else to write about my art, but I’d have to pay them, and unfortunately, I can’t afford that.

I really want to have more of my products on the blog, but I’m not sure how to make that happen without it looking spammy or boring. I wouldn’t put up more than one promo post a day, but I want to make those posts interesting if I can. I’m just not sure how. I want you all to see what I do and get interested in it and share it and buy it and all that good stuff, I’m just not sure how to go about it. Of course, if any of you out there want to write a blog or social media post about any of my books or products, feel free, and tell me about it so that I can share. You’d probably have more interesting things to say about my work than I do. [smiles]

During all of this, I’m trying not to get discouraged at the lack of business. This has been my worst year ever, and I’m not sure why. I have done pretty damn well in the past. I really want to get that back. I suppose that losing some of the sites that I was really popular on has been part of it, but there’s probably more to it than that. More than anything, I think I just need to get people to know more about me and what I do so that my name is recognized like it used to be.

If any of you have any tips that I could use, feel free to throw them at me in the comment section. I’ve tried a lot, but you never know, you might give me the great idea or new angle that will be just what I need. In the meantime, I’m going to do whatever I can think of, and hope for the best. With this year coming to a close, I’m really hoping that 2015 will be my best year ever, and make up for the lean times that 2014 has brought me.

If you really get stuck on the descriptions, I’ll help you if I can. I don’t usually have a big story about my art. I follow my intuition and create what feels right. Good luck with your sales. Wendy

      Thank you so much. 🙂
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who just does the art, no big story to go with it. We create some great stuff though, right?

I didn’t know you sold Christmas ornaments until I saw your post about someone’s purchase of some. I think the daily item spotlight might be useful to people not familiar with the range of your work.

I think you’re right, people just don’t know that the stuff is there. I’m going to start doing a daily post about various designs and let people know what’s in the shop. Hopefully that will get business to pick up. We actually carry 162 different types of product in the store right now in over 400 designs.
