cat freaky wide eyedI know I’ll probably sound like one of those “old” people when I type this but I just have to. I’ve made it no secret that I like cartons. I’m not just talking about animated movies and such, there is a difference after all.

Maybe I should go off on a tangent about that for a minute. I’ve heard it from a lot of people that cartoons are for children. When they say this they aren’t just referring to the short toons, they also mean animated feature films. I have to wonder if they have watched all the movies I have. Watch “Heavy Metal” and just TRY to tell me that all animated films are for children. I double dog dare you.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, it’s time to talk about the quality of cartoons in recent times. In a nutshell, I am far less than impressed. By the way, I do NOT have any children, I watch cartoons because I like them. The current batch of cartoons makes me wonder what they are thinking though. I know it’s “just a cartoon” but does it have to be written so badly? I remember watching cartoons when I was younger, and almost all of them had some kind of message attached. Granted, some of them were just silly slapstick with NO dialogue at all, but still. We want our children to be able to think don’t we?

While we’re at it, what happened to the quality of art in cartoons? When did someone decide that cartoons need to look like they were drawn by a mutant zombie on a sugar rush? Seriously, they look bad. Really bad. Not all of them, but enough of them for me to seriously wonder. From an artist’s point of view, it’s a bad precedent to set. What precedent could art quality on a cartoon set you ask? Simple, the artists for cartoons get PAID. That means that other artists wanting to make a living must now draw like a zombie in order to make a living. Is that the kind of art you want to see being created?

Cartoons need to seriously go through some quality control. Step up your game, we’re influencing artists and writers of the future.
