WalMart Would Rather Close than Pay Workers?

I was just reading an article on Think Progress and it makes me really glad that we rarely ever go anywhere near WalMart stores anymore.

Quite some time ago the horrible practices of WalMart stores toward their employees, coupled with bad service, low product quality and lack of selection caused us to stop shopping there. We only go to a WalMart if it is impossible to buy what we need anywhere else, and that’s incredibly rare. After reading this article, I’m even more sure that they don’t need my money.

The issue here is that WalMart would rather close their stores than pay their workers a fair wage. They have threatened to close stores in several areas that were instituting fair wage laws, and in response, the laws were repealed. Basically, WalMart is stopping people from getting fair wages anywhere by threatening to close their stores. WalMart is a huge retailer where many low income people shop, so their stores are needed. Lawmakers would rather have the store than give people enough money to survive.

There’s so much wrong with that picture. I say let the stores close. Let them lose business. Someone else will pick up the slack, and it will be a chain willing to pay their employees a wage they can actually live on. It might hurt for a while, but people would find other places to shop and life would go on. Let WalMart fail. Legislators should not be backing down on this, they should force the issue so that people can earn a livable wage.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Stop shopping at WalMart. Some people claim it’s the only place that they can afford to shop, but I have proven that there are alternatives. We shop for groceries at Publix and sometimes Kroger, we make use of the local dollar stores, Salvation Army and Goodwill. Every once in a while we go to Target, and we order things from Amazon.com. We do just fine, and we have an incredibly limited income.

It’s up to consumers to take a stand against companies that have harmful policies. Let your wallet do the talking by not shopping at places that treat their workers badly or engage in other questionable practices.

The standards at Walmart are awful! We won’t shop there either unless we absolutely HAVE to.

Everything about them sucks. It’s disgusting that they’re allowed to stay in business. If people would wake up and quit shopping there then they would change or shut down, unfortunately not enough people are willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Sadly the corporate fat cats don’t care about the people working in the store. While the suits are working in their cushy offices, or out playing golf, good people are working for pennies in store that carry products that are of poor quality. It’s like a chain sweatshop almost (I hate using that comparison).

It really is like that. And then society treats the workers like crap because they’re poor and miserable. It’s not all their fault. It’s got to be hell to keep a positive attitude when you get worked too hard and too long for too little pay and get treated like crap by the customers. It’s the same with the fast food chains like McDonalds.
