Healthy snacks can taste good too

Healthy snack options that taste good can be hard to come by. Here I’ll share my top 5 favorite healthy snacks.

Over the years I have been making more of an effort to eat right. Unfortunately, eating healthy doesn’t always equal eating what tastes good. I won’t eat things that I don’t enjoy just because they’re good for me. As time has gone by, I’ve found some great healthy snacks that taste great.

5. Breakfast bars. Breakfast bars come in all sorts of flavors, and there are a wide variety of them on the market that are very healthy. Even if you don’t do breakfast, these bars can make great healthy snacks. Nature Valley has a dark chocolate nut bar that I absolutely love late at night when I need a chocolate fix.

4. Corn on the cob. Corn on the cob is a healthy snack that tastes great. I tend to buy several ears each week for late night snacking. I prefer white corn because it’s crispy and sweeter than yellow corn, but you can choose whichever you prefer. It doesn’t take a long time to prepare either. I cut the ends off, but leave the husk intact. Pop a single ear in the microwave for 3 ½ to 4 minutes. Push corn holders into the ends and remove the husk and silk. You can either eat it plain or with a little bit of butter or margarine spread.

3. Cereal. Cereal can make an excellent healthy snack. You don’t have to eat a granola type cereal either. Raisin Nut Bran and Cheerios are ones I really like. There are plenty of tasty cereals on the market that are good for you. Just check the nutrition labels on each type of cereal to determine which type might make a healthy snack.

2. Crackers. There are several types of cracker on the market that make a healthy snack option. If you can eat wheat, Triscuits can be really good and come in several flavors. My current favorite are Special K Multi-grain Crackers. They’re crispy and tasty, and I can munch them right out of the box. If you want, you can also put things on your crackers to make them more tasty and filling. I like to put reduced fat provolone cheese, a bit of Roma tomato and a slice of black olive on each cracker. This makes for a delicious snack, or even lunch.

1. Salad platters. I don’t like going to all the work of making a salad, and it leaves me open to use too much dressing, so I make up salad platters for a healthy snack or dinner. A platter will usually consist of some lettuce, tomato, olives, bell pepper, carrot, crackers and a bit of cheese. Sometimes I add other veggies if I have them on hand. I’ll put a bit of dressing in a ramekin for dipping. I make these up all the time. If I’m doing it for dinner I’ll usually add some sliced turkey or ham so I have some meat in the meal.

Try some of these out for yourself, you might find that healthy snack options can also be tasty. Remember, if you’re dieting, you need to eat things you enjoy or you may be at risk of giving up on the diet. And my personal suggestion for losing weight: Don’t count calories! Counting calories will drive you nuts and make you quit. Just eat healthy food in responsible portions and keep your activity level up.
