Reverence for jelly beans sounds kinda stupid doesn’t it? Who in their right mind would worship or have reverence for a candy? Well take a good look around you, there is an everyday object that gets more worship than any religion ever created.
Oh yeah, that’s right. I’m not the crazy one here. People act as if money is the end-all be-all of all existence. Don’t think so? Give yours away. All of it. Can’t do it can you? Why not? It’s just a scrap of cotton and paper, why is it so important to you?
If I asked you to give away all the candy in your entire house, you could do it. You could even rationalize it away as a good thing. Silly human. I could convince you that candy and sugar are an evil worse than the devil and you’d be glad to go right along with it. Whichever way you want to go, candy just isn’t that important to you is it? I disagree.
I can eat jelly beans, They make me happy 🙂 They remind me of childhood, when things were simpler and dreams were glorious. Candy has inherent worth, it can be eaten, it might even save a life or two. Look into hypoglycemia if you doubt me. You should bow before the might of jelly beans!
Now money, there’s an odd thing. I suppose you could use it for insulation or fire tinder. but what else can you actually do with it? So why is it so important? Why do so many people worship it like a god? Why is it that everything you do everyday of your life pivots around a scrap of paper? I know, I know, I’m just as guilty. Or so you think. I like candy which costs money, or does it?
What if I traded a picture I drew for a small bag of jelly beans? Or maybe a I wrote an epic inspiring essay and people felt the need to mail me boxes of chocolate in thanks? Maybe I’ll use my crafting skills to make a toy and give it to a child. Maybe that act will be seen by someone with more wealth than me, and maybe that person will give a hundred toys to a hundred children. What would happen if money became obsolete?
What if jelly beans became the new form of currency? Would Jelly Belly be our treasury dept and jail anyone who made jelly beans at home?
