Critters 3Last night we decided to watch a movie we haven’t seen in ages: Critters. It’s an 80s horror about vicious little monsters from outer space. I remember liking it way back when, so we wanted to watch it again just for fun. It seemed so cheesy by today’s standards, but it was still fun.

Sometimes it’s worth it to dig out old movies from the 80s and 90s and rewatch them. They’re usually a hoot. Sometimes you gain a new appreciation for them (like how much better the original The Thing was than the new The Thing) and sometimes you just get a good giggle. I had to laugh about how I had a crush on Terrence Mann back in the day, and my god how young Billy Zane looked!

It baffles me that there are people who refuse to watch older movies. They don’t know what they’re missing! There were a lot of good movies pre-2000, some are the kind of thing that if you’ve never seen them, you’re actually missing out on parts of modern society because they’re referenced so often. There was also a lot of cheese released back then, but at least it was fun to watch. Especially in the horror genre, the 80s produced some stuff that you just can’t help but laugh at.

People seem to forget that modern doesn’t always mean better, and not every movie is meant to be a cinematic work of art. Some movies are actually intended to be goofy and over-the-top. One other thing that the older movies are good for is seeing practical effects and makeups before they had the technology for heavy CG. I have huge respect for the artists who did the makeups and creatures for a lot of the older movies. That takes real talent, and it’s something that doesn’t get as much screen time as it used to.

If you want to have a good time some night, make some popcorn or get a bowl of chips, and dust off some of those 80s and 90s movies. There are some really great films, and some real lemons too, but you can have fun either way. One of my favorite things about watching older movies is seeing how young everyone was, and playing connect the dots to where I’ve seen them lately. And the music! Let’s not forget the music back then! [laughs]

This all makes me think, one of these days I need to see if I can get my hands on some of the old black-and-white original horror movies, like Dracula and The Wolf Man. I’ve never actually gotten to see any of them all the way through. Sometimes seeing older movies gives you a much greater appreciation fro how far things have come in cinema.

Or for how far things have gone! It’s true that there are still some pretty good films being made now, but there’s more junk now than ever!

I know! We have such a hard time finding movies these days because they’re either brainless “comedies” or just effects with little or no plot. I especially miss the good comedies.

The problem with most “comedies” these days is that they are written for the lowest common denominator. Even actors and funnymen that are usually good get wasted in a lot of today’s flicks because of scripts that insult the intelligence of people that actually want to enjoy witty humor.

Exactly. I’ve found that we’re enjoying and even looking for, more British and Canadian shows and movies because they’re so much better.
