I decided to head over to Google this afternoon because I thought it would be a great idea to find some humorous inspirational images or quotes that I could share with all of you. It was my intention to find something funny and uplifting to start the day. Unfortunately, what the search engine results offered to me was so far from what I wanted that it left me stunned and more than a little unhappy.
A search for “funny inspiration” didn’t bring up the humorous, uplifting content that I was hoping for. Instead I was presented with pages of offensive, stupid, horrible crap. Yes, in my opinion it was almost all crap, and I have trouble believing that there are people broken enough to find these things amusing in any way. It’s things like this that almost make me want to throw in the towel and give up, because I can barely wrap my head around how society has fallen this far.
I won’t link to any of the things I saw, because they don’t deserve the traffic. However, I will tell you some of what I saw so you can understand exactly what it is that makes me so sad for humanity right now. The first one was a very obese person in eyeliner with a quote that read “Fat Emo – When the world gets you down, just eat it” Another showed a half-naked image of Pamela Anderson with the line “Hepatitis C – Sign me up for that shit” and another showed a woman crying on a bed with the quote “Prevent Rape: Just say yes”. Many of the other images were degrading women and calling them sluts and whores, several depicted drunken stupidity like a guy falling asleep with his face in a urinal. Photos of misspelled tattoos rounded out the collection.
How exactly is this kind of garbage what I get when searching for “funny inspiration”? It’s not inspiring and not even remotely funny. It is sad, offensive and disgusting. These images clearly show that people’s intelligence and respect for themselves and others is at an all-time low. I’m not sure who I’d consider to be more damaged, the people who make these images or the people who find them entertaining and share them. Both sets of people obviously have serious issues. Sometimes I wish I could reach out and grab people like this, smack them several times and scream “Wake the f*ck up!” But they’d probably find that funny too. It’s just sad.
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to reach people like that. I suppose the best I can do is reach as many people as I can. Teach important lessons and get people living better lives. Every time one person changes for the better, it creates a little more of a shift in the world. As more and more people open their eyes, see what’s around them and act to change it, things get just a little bit better. As I always say though, we each have to act. We have to think and we have to speak. Shrugging your shoulders, tossing up your hands and saying “What can you do?” or “That’s just hoe things are.” will never change anything. We cannot allow ourselves to simply accept what we see in the world that’s wrong. We have to do whatever it is we can, no matter how much or how little it may be, to make things better. Learn what you can. Become a better person. Teach others. Every action you take is a step to making a better world.
