One of my connections has been going through a bit of a crisis involving whether to write because they love it and hope to make money, or aim for the money and end up hating writing. It’s not an uncommon problem for writers, and it got me to thinking about writing, and about jobs in general.

I’m a firm believer that everyone should be doing what they love. You can make money doing just about anything these days, so following your dream is possible, if you believe and you’re willing to go for it. So why do so many people hate their jobs? Why do they work jobs they despise? Why do they allow things they once loved to become things they hate over money?

Some say they “have to” for the money, but I don’t believe that. Sure, we all have had to take jobs we didn’t like to get by for a while, but you don’t have to live like that. You can pursue your dream and make it what you do and earn the money you need. People rail against this idea with such ferocity! “No!” They say. “Work is work and for money, fun is fun. You can’t make real money doing things you love.”

Then someone like me comes along and says “So what about all the people who loved cooking and became chefs? What about the people who loved sewing and became fashion designers? What about someone who loved creating characters and became a famous writer?” I could go on, but there are infinite examples of people who did what they had to for a little while, but put their heart and soul into making a living doing what they adored. There are equally numerous examples of people who succeeded.

Many of the great teachers and gurus agree that we should follow our heart. Find out what your gift is and use it. Do what you love, and the money will follow. This could be true for many more people if they’d just let go of the resistance. If you believe that you can do what you love and earn a living, then you’ll find a way. If you believe you can’t, well, you won’t. Take a good look at the world and start following the example of people who’ve made it work, not the other non-believers.

I absolutely believe that I can pursue my loves and talents and make a living at it. My income keeps increasing as I put my love and dedication into what I do. I only see it going up from here. I believe that we’re all capable of turning what we love into our income source, and we can be happy bringing our gifts to the world.
