I was thinking about the cycle of stupidity and the way people act online. LynLomasi was mentioning to me how it bugs her too that she posts a bunch of important stuff and no one cares, but she posts a stupid meme and people are all over it with tons of interaction. It made me think of one of the dumbest and most prevalent excuses people have for creating and sharing useless content. “It’s what people want.”

I hate that excuse with a passion. It’s not even a good reason. There are lots of stupid people. They want content that doesn’t require them to think or act or really use their brains in any way. So… You’re going to give it to them? Really? That makes sense to you? What world are you living in?

Why would anyone consciously create more content for the lowest parts of the IQ chart? “Let’s perpetuate carelessness, idiocy and low intelligence! Yeah! Sounds awesome!” Seriously? This is a major problem in our society, and you’re going to perpetuate it on purpose. Brilliant.

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of people right here on Bubblews who are cutting their posts down as close to the minimum as they can because “people don’t want to read” and “people have short attention spans”. I want to smack them. Instead of making valuable content and encouraging people to pay attention and read more, you’re going to cater to the least intelligent and least capable people who visit the site? Are you on drugs? But they’ll make more money and that’s apparently more important than making intelligent choices.

I’ve also seen people who quit supporting causes and stopped sharing real statuses on FaceBook because “people only want to see memes and cute stuff”. So instead of doing the right thing, you’re going to cater to the idiocy and become part of the problem. Yeah, that makes all kinds of sense. sure.

Just because a lot of people want something, that doesn’t mean it’s right or responsible to give it to them. Catering to the lower portions of society is not the right thing to do. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Most people don’t know what they want until you give it to them. Create valuable content and refuse to lower yourself and you could create a shift in what people want. At very least, you wouldn’t be perpetuating the problems.
