I wonder sometimes why it is that people just refuse to accept the possibility that they can do things. Looking back at myself, the only reason I can come up with is laziness and lack of faith in oneself.

So many people say “I can’t __blah__ because…” and the excuses follow. And people get adamant, insisting that their excuses are actually legitimate reasons. Most of the time though, they’re not. Even some of the actual reasons are not as limiting as people want to believe they are.

I used to think I couldn’t be a successful writer because I didn’t have training. I used to think that I couldn’t do what I want and make money. I used to think that I couldn’t meditate, sleep through the night, do yoga, and lots of other things. “Used to” being the operative term there. I found that all my oh-so-good reasons were just excuses, and that I’m capable of a lot more than i or anyone else would think I am.

People need to give themselves some credit and believe in possibility. All those “I can’t” statements are just limiting you to a small, unhappy life. Try “I can”. Or, if you aren’t ready for that, try “I might be able to” or “I can give it a shot”. You may very well surprise yourself. I find that the more I let go of excuses and actually try, the more I’m able to do that I used to think I couldn’t. It’s not always easy, but every bit of success lets me know that I can have even more.

Stop selling yourself short or allowing other people to. You never know what you can do until you try. You may be awesome at things, or at least good. If you let go of doubt too, you’re likely to surprise yourself on a regular basis. never think you can’t until you’ve tried, and know that an honest try has to involve faith and optimism.
