We’ve all seen this plot: Average or “ugly” guy sees a “hot” chick. Guy wants the hot chick. Guy becomes a raging jerkoff or otherwise changes his whole personality/appearance to try to get the girl. Guy realizes that A) Girl was not worth wanting or B) Girl liked him better before. Guy goes back to being his true self and lives happily ever after.

The lesson is pretty simple: Just be yourself. If you don’t like yourself, no one else is going to. Changing yourself to be what you think someone else wants is only going to make you miserable because you can only live a lie for just so long. Not to mention the fact that eventually the other person is going to find out who you really are, and not want you because they thought you were someone else.

Too many people change themselves to try to get friends or worse, to try to get love. Love based on lies isn’t real love though. If you’re not being true to who you really are, you can’t have a real love. They’ll be loving who they think you are, not you. Relationships like that won’t last. You need honesty to have a relationship that lasts.

It’s also rather common, unfortunately, for people to pick someone they sort of like, then try to change everything else about them to make them “perfect”. The thing is, it’s not a loving thing to try to turn someone into something they’re not. You’re not “fixing” them, you’re turning them into what you want. It’s better to find someone who’s already what you want.

Never change who you are, or allow yourself to be changed by someone else, unless it’s what you truly want. We all have flaws that could use work, but it needs to be your choice to become a better person, not just a different one. Never do, say or wear things that go against your true nature just to try to impress someone else. If they don’t like who you really are, they’ll never truly like you at all.
