I’ve heard more than a few atheists in my day claim that there are no intelligent spiritualists. There are people who actually believe that anyone with faith is less intelligent than people without any. I take serious issue with that line of thought.

How can anyone think that there is a correlation between intelligence and spirituality? How could faith, or lack thereof, be tied to intelligence? It’s certainly insulting to claim that you’re smarter than someone else because you don’t have spiritual beliefs. Of course, there are believers who think the same thing of atheists. I think they’re both wrong.

I don’t think that faith, or a lack of faith, has anything to do with how smart someone is. Some do claim that highly intelligent people often become atheists, but I don’t think there’s been any real research on the connection between faith and intelligence.

I suppose both sides can feel very strongly about the issue. I do wonder how anyone with any level of knowledge could doubt that there is something greater than us in the universe. It seems to me that science is consistently proving that there is a god presence. There is something that connects us all and to some extent at least, guides us. The atheists on the other hand, think that science clearly proves that god can’t exist, and that believers are experiencing some sort of mass delusion only affected upon the weak minded.

No matter how you look at it, I don’t think either side has the right to insult the intelligence of the other. I do wonder if the mostly atheist-based idea that believers are less intelligent stems from the extremists. In any religion there are people who go too far and end up looking really bad, even stupid. Of course, there are non-believers who have gone to the point of insanity as well in their actions, so it’s certainly not something limited just to people of faith.

I believe in a greater power. My beliefs may seem odd to some, but I would have to seriously argue if anyone questioned my intelligence just because I have faith.
