I’ve discussed the topic of how a certain level of selfishness can actually be beneficial for both yourself and the world at large. “Heal yourself, heal the world” takes a deeper look into part of that.

As bad as it may sound on the surface, you are the most important person in the world. If you aren’t at your best, you can’t do positive things for yourself or anyone else. You don’t want to be conceited or self-absorbed, but if you’re sick or broken, all the selfless thoughts in the world won’t mean a thing. You can’t give if you have nothing to give.

Each of us needs to take time in our lives to care for ourselves. You need to work constantly for your own mental and physical health. That endeavor will only take part of each day, but it should be a regular part of life. A healthy person can give more to the world than an unhealthy one.

I’ve written a few posts about healing yourself and overcoming incurable illness, and I recommend taking a look at them. Taking care of yourself physically is an important part of being healthy and having the most to give to the world. When you can focus less on pain and illness in yourself, you have more time and energy for other things.

Taking care of your mental health is also very important. If you’re mentally damaged, it can make it harder for you to help others without impressing your own issues onto them. We all have issues, we all have things to overcome, and we should be doing that. As you grow and become a better person, you can use that to help others, and you’ll gain new knowledge and awareness that you can also share.

As we take care of our own needs, we gain what we need to be better able to care for the needs of others. As the pains of illness and mental disorder leave us, we are more able to help ease illness and mental disorder in others. So even though it seems selfish to take good care of yourself and work on your own problems, you’re actually you’re acquiring the tools to be more help to the world. Plus, every one of us that becomes a healthier, better person is one less broken individual in the world.
