When you grow as a person, some of your likes and dislikes are bound to change. Overall, it’s a good thing because you’re becoming someone better, but it can be annoying in the short term.

For example, I recently gave up watching several crime drama shows that I had been a fan of for years. There was almost a feeling of withdrawal. I had watched them for so many years, they were a part of my weekly life. Giving them up felt like turning my back on an old friend. Of course, there are times when you have to do that as well. Now I’m trying to figure out what to do with those four hours per week that I will no longer be wasting in front of the TV. Books, meditating and gaming will probably fill the slot.

I’ve also decided, as had Eric, that while we don’t have too much of a problem with some violence in video games, we just aren’t enjoying games where the whole point is war or death. It’s no big deal shooting cartoon zombies with peas or slashing a few orcs, but killing all the time just isn’t cutting it anymore. So now we’re faced with the dilemma of finding new games to play on the XBox when the market is saturated with shoot-em-ups.

We also encountered a problem in gaming (RPGing) together. Eric is the GM and I got to where I couldn’t stand him running games centered on drama, conflict and death. You may have read his article asking for advice in running a story with less violence. Luckily, that has been going well the last two nights. He shot me out into space like Chrichton and now I’m captain of a research and missionary vessel with a Delvian Jedi as my first crew member. [smiles] I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, but it wasn’t exactly easy coming up with a new way to play.

Luckily, I’m getting really good at mastering my calm. I’m not freaking out at all the change, I’m trying to roll with it. It’s a little bumpy of a ride, but I’m taking it the best I can. I know there will be more minor annoyances in the future, but I’m learning to accept that it’s just part of growing, and it’s well worth it in the long run.
