there-is

I realized some time back that Eric was using “there’s” incorrectly. A lot. It got really annoying, so I started pointing it out and correcting him. He wasn’t even aware he was doing it, and was annoyed. Not at me for helping him, but at the fact that he’d been using it wrong so often. We’re still working on it.

I wondered where a smart person could get such a bad verbal habit from, so I started paying more attention to things. It turns out that it’s all over television. People are using “there’s” incorrectly all over the place. We hear it many times every day. I’m really aware of grammar and speech, so I don’t allow it to affect me, but apparently if you’re not on top of it, it can seep in and affect you.

Here’s the simple rule for using “there’s” correctly.

There’s is a conjunction of there is
There is one, there are many – There’s one, there are many
“There are no more hot dogs.” = correct / “There’s no more hot dogs.” = incorrect
“There’s a lot of problems here.” = incorrect / “There are a lot of problems here.” = correct

There’s no conjunction for there are. I think that’s part of the problem, people are too lazy to say there are, so they say there’s instead. And of course, in our lazy society, people are allowing it to slide. They shouldn’t. With the hip-hop speak, internet speak and other grammar and speech laziness, we’re headed for a world full of gibbering idiots.

Everyone should try to speak and write correctly. We all make mistakes, but we should always try our best. You should also courteously accept corrections on your grammar and writing. Who wants to sound stupid? It may take a bit of effort to learn to be verbally accurate, but it’s not going to kill you, and it’s for the best.

Make sure you’re using there is and there are properly, and watch out for other mistakes like the dreaded your-you’re-yore and the like. grammarly.com is a great place to go if you need help, and you can get a laugh at the same time. They make proper grammar and spelling fun.
