I don’t think people should “try” to write poetry. I think real poetry should come from the soul. It should be a part of you and your experiences making it out into the world.

I know there are people who call themselves poets, and they strictly adhere to rules about what poetry is and how it should be written. I suppose that’s fine for them, but to me that’s not real poetry, it’s like any other forced writing. They’re trying to express a certain feeling or image through words, whether they really feel it or not. I think poetry should be about feeling.

I never try to write poetry. Either it comes to me or it doesn’t. I’ve actually gone for years without writing any. I can open myself up to feeling to facilitate writing poetry, but that’s the closes thing to trying I ever get. I never force the words onto the paper. I never worry about form or type. I let what’s in me flow out, and I accept the results for what they are. I love most of my work and I’m unimpressed with a few pieces, but it’s all natural and it all flowed. It wanted to be written, and I allowed it to be so.

Do you think poetry should come from the soul and be freely written, or written with great consideration for form and rules? Do you care either way as long as the piece moves you?

I always think it’s kind of sad when people force writing, especially poetry. Unless you’re writing a manual or absolute fact, I personally think it’s better when you just do what comes naturally.
