There was an interesting discussion in one of my FaceBook groups the other day about having multiple identities for writing and promoting one’s work.

Someone was asking if they should keep their personal writing and professional writing separate, or promote them together. The prevailing view was to mix them. You are one person, so let the world see everything you do. This feeling is a serious departure from what people have been thinking for many years.

For a long time people thought that it was necessary to keep one’s real life away from their work. Have multiple social accounts and even writing accounts so that the two would never mix. Writers were advised to have many pseudonyms, one for each genre so that no one would know that they wrote in more than one.

I always thought this was foolish. I am a widely varied person. I have many talents. I want people to know all that I do. I want them to see that I am a real person, varied and talented and wonderful. I don’t want them to see me as a one-dimensional thing. Others however, felt that they should have shame and fear over allowing the public to know them fully for all they are and all they do.

Interestingly, that feeling is shifting. Some people are realizing that showing all their talents and variety makes them more interesting and they make more fans and more money. They have shed the fear of people knowing them, and are more open. They benefit from it and set a good example for others. People are also realizing that being a bit less “professional” and being more human is beneficial as well. People like real people.

For those still using multiple names and identities, I encourage you to step out of that way of being and bring your work together. You may find, as many of us have, that it can do wonders for you. It also saves you the stress of basically giving yourself a multiple personality disorder.
