Not quite a week ago we had an unexpected visitor and I had to write about it. Today, yet another grasshopper made his presence known to us.

This time it wasn’t a brown one, but a green one that looked just like a young leaf. We first spotted him on the back door, right at face level. He startled us, but after reading the symbolism of grasshoppers, Eric and I just gave each other a curious look, wondering what it might mean. We went inside assuming he’d be gone soon. We just went back out again, and this time he jumped from god only knows where and landed on Eric.

Eric brushed him away and he landed on the coleus we keep on the deck table. he walked around on the leaves, regarding us with beady little eyes. He was still sitting in the plant when we came back inside. We haven’t seen many grasshoppers in the three years we’ve lived here, and certainly none that stuck around long enough to be watched. This makes two of different types.

Is the universe giving us signs? Grasshoppers represent faith and moving into the future. After the day we’ve had, was something trying to tell us to hold on a little longer? Hold on to our faith that humanity can be saved? Keep going just one more day? Maybe. We don’t really believe in coincidence, so it has gotten us thinking again. If nothing else, it’s nice to have a beautiful part of nature come so close to us.

Last night there was also an opossum. Not something we see too frequently here, and I always miss them. Last night I got a good long look as the creature strolled across our lawn. Opossums are said to represent the use of intuition and intellect to get out of tough situations. It is said they tell you to pay attention, things are not as they seem. It can also be a sign that you need to take a break (play dead) from whatever is going on in your life, or find a crafty solution.

It seems we’ve had a lot of critters around here giving us signs and signals, I just wish they’d be a bit more clear. Of course, the Universe is not prone to doing the work for you, instead she leaves vague signs and expects you to find your own way. It’s a bitch, but when you figure out how to read the signs, things change in wonderful and interesting ways.
