I’ve mentioned it before, but one of the best things I’ve done for myself is letting go of the competitive mind. So many people feel that they’re in competition with everyone around them that they’re in a constant state of stress and always feeling that they’re not good enough. When you let go of the competition mindset, you have much less stress and can find more happiness.
Let’s use Bubblews as an example, shall we? Okay, so you want to write, and you want to make money. You spend most of your time worrying about the “rules” of writing and looking at how many views/likes/payments other people are getting. You’re constantly stressed trying to be “good enough”. Your writing ends up suffering, you make less money, and you then stress more because you’re falling behind in the race.
Stop competing! You don’t need to make as much as anyone else. You don’t need to write as many articles or get as many views or do what they’re doing. Stop looking at others and focus on yourself instead. Write what you want, not what others tell you will make money. Write in your own style, not the style others say is most profitable. Post as much as you want, or as little. Put love and the real you into every piece. That’s the way to success.
“But other people are doing X and making X, they must have it right!” Nope. They just have one way. Stop trying to be someone else. Stop making it a competition to be as good as or better than someone else. There are a million paths to success, not just one. You don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. That way only leads to madness.
See, the thing is, when you’re comparing yourself to someone else, you’re going to be doing it forever. Even if you somehow get to be the best, there’s someone nipping at your heels, ready to become better than you. Then you will feel a need to compare to them, and the one that knocks them out of #1. Just stop it. You’ll never be happy living like that.
Would I like to make as much as some other writers? Of course! But I’m not stressing to get to where they are. I’m not looking at them to try to measure myself. I smile when I hear people saying they’re getting more traffic and making more than me. Someone in the competitive mindset will be angry or feel bad about themselves when they hear someone else is doing better. Not me. I’m glad for their success, and I know mine is coming. I put love and truth into what I do, and I do my personal best. I don’t need to be better than someone else. If I happen to be, that’s fine, but I may very well help them to get where I am or even beyond.
Some people insist that competition is necessary, but they’re wrong. You should be driven to do your personal best, not worry about constantly being measured against someone else. You don’t need to compete to excel. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and just focus on doing your own thing, and doing it to the best of your own ability.
