It seems odd that such a thing as one’s schedule could be a topic for insults, but apparently it can be.
I know someone who frequently makes jabs about my schedule. “I get up early in the morning like normal people.” He’ll say. Or “If you had a real schedule you could do other stuff.” They’re small pokes, but still rude and unnecessary. I’ve tried to explain that one person’s schedule is no better than another, but it has never sunk in.
I run a “late shift” schedule of sorts. I’m up between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM and go to bed between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM. It’s been this way for years. At one point it was a compromise so everyone in the house slept at the same time, then it was a way to have private time after the roommates went to bed. At any rate, our schedule is what it is, and there’s nothing wrong with it.
Unfortunately I have encountered people over the years who think that if you’re not up at dawn and asleep before midnight you’re doing something wrong. Some even go so far as to equate a late schedule with laziness. I’m sure that second and third shift workers would heartily argue with the idea that they’re lazy simply because they’re not up at 6:00 AM.
What would give someone this idea? What would make anyone think one schedule is better than another? Do they truly believe that someone with a first-shift job is superior to those who work other shifts? What about people with rotating schedules? Dad sometimes goes into work at 7:00 AM, sometimes 3:00 PM, sometimes 11:00 PM. Is he lazy or crazy or wrong? I think not.
There are already too many things people hate and insult each other over. Please let this one go. No scheduling plan makes one person better than another. No work hours make someone less than any other. We do what we do for whatever reasons we do them. Have some respect and let people live their lives.
